Science Students in Training

It's been almost 3 weeks since school has started, and I have figured out what I have been doing: training my students toward MY way of science learning. It's been a struggle for everyone - including me! There are so many new things for my students to learn. What to do when they come into the room, where to sit, when it's time to be quiet, when it's time to talk (and at what volume!), where to turn in papers, where to turn in notebooks, which notebook to turn in, which side of the notebook to use...WHEW! And that's just for one class!
This week's training has revolved around preparing for, setting up, and carrying out a lab. We are learning how to do chemical tests for sugar and starch, which will come in handy when we are trying to figure out how the mouth begins the digestive process. On Monday, we looked at the introduction and objectives of the lab. On Tuesday, we created a data table, wrote down the steps of the two different tests, and made the solutions which we would be testing. On Wednesday (today), we were able to test each of the solutions for sugar and figure out what had sugar and what didn't. On Thursday, we will test for starch and analyze our results. Four days...
Next week maybe we will be able to do TWO labs!

It sounds like you have a good step-by-step approach . . . looking forward to reading more about your class!

I'm curious to know if you are using your blog to keep parents informed of your adventures in your science classroom. I liked your diary-like entry of the week's happenings.
